Sawmill Residues Have Value: How to Monetize Sawdust, Wood Chips and Slabs

Ask any sawmill operator what they do with their sawdust, wood chips and slabs, and the most common answer is: "we throw it away", "we keep it for burning" or "we pay someone to haul it". In most sawmills, process residues are seen purely and simply as a cost — the cost of disposing of what's left over.

This view is wrong. And it's costing money.

A sawmill processing 100 m³ of logs per month generates, depending on the dimension mix and equipment, between 30 and 50 m³ equivalent of residues — sawdust, wood chips, slabs, edgings and firewood. Each of these materials has specific markets, real buyers and established prices. The difference between ignoring this flow and selling it can represent $1,000 to $3,000 per month in additional revenue — without changing anything in the main production.

In practice, a log that converts 55% into sawn lumber generates 45% of material that can be a residue or secondary product. The exact proportion depends on log diameter, dimension mix and equipment kerf.

Sawdust: more markets than you think

Poultry and livestock bedding

The demand for sawdust as poultry house litter is enormous. Broiler farms change bedding every batch (35–45 days) and need constant volume. Ideal sawdust is dry and free from fungi or chemically treated wood. Pine and dry eucalyptus are preferred.

Typical price: $15–$35 per m³ in bulk, or $3–$6 per bag (40 liters).

Ceramics and brick industry

Sawdust mixed into clay for porous brick manufacturing. The sawdust burns during sintering, creating pores that reduce weight and increase thermal insulation. Constant demand in regions with active brickworks.

Mushroom cultivation

Sawdust substrate — preferably from hardwoods — is the base for growing shiitake, oyster and other specialty mushrooms. Growing niche with artisanal and functional mushroom company buyers.

Composting and landscaping

Untreated wood sawdust enters as a carbon material in domestic and commercial composting. Lower price but accessible local market.

Wood chips: biomass with a growing market

Energy biomass

Ceramics factories, industrial laundries, bakeries, greenhouses and industrial boilers use wood chips as fuel. Eucalyptus chips are especially valued for their calorific value.

Typical price: $25–$60 per stere (cubic meter stacked), depending on moisture and region. Dry chips are worth more.

Paper and pulp industry

For sawmills near paper or pulp factories, chips can be sold directly as process raw material. Requires technical specifications (chip thickness, moisture content, bark-free) and minimum volumes, but commands higher prices than energy biomass.

Slabs: from waste to product

Slabs are the concave pieces that come off the sides of the log — the curved part that doesn't become a rectangular piece. Depending on thickness and species, they have three possible destinations:

Direct firewood sales

Eucalyptus and pine slabs are excellent firewood for pizzerias, steakhouses, bakeries and residential use. Constant local demand. A sawmill producing 100 m³/month can generate 3–6 steres of slabs per month.

Typical price: $40–$100 per stere depending on region and species. Eucalyptus is worth more for its calorific value.

Processing into smaller pieces

Thicker, straighter slabs can be reprocessed into battens, small boards and furring strips — generating products with higher added value than firewood. Requires a pass through an edger or circular saw, but the margin gain justifies it in many cases.

Charcoal production

In regions where charcoal has a strong market, slabs and edgings from hardwoods can be carbonized. Charcoal commands a higher price than firewood and has constant demand at local markets.

  4. Invest in packaging if needed. Bagged sawdust is worth 2–3x more than bulk. A simple bagging machine pays back quickly.
  5. Formalize higher-volume flows. When volume justifies it, establish regular supply contracts — farms and ceramics factories value predictability.

Conclusion

Residue without a destination is a cost. Residue with a buyer is a product. The difference lies in knowing the local market, separating correctly and charging for what you deliver.

The sawmill that turns its residues into secondary revenue reduces its production cost per m³ sawn without touching the main operation. It's the cheapest margin gain that exists — and it starts simply by stopping throwing value away.
